WASHINGTON, April 7, 2026 — U.S. President Donald J. Trump said the United States will suspend planned military action against Iran for two weeks, citing ongoing negotiations and requests from regional leaders.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir, who urged restraint.

He said the pause was conditional on Iran agreeing to the “complete, immediate, and safe” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.

Trump described the move as part of a potential “double-sided ceasefire” and said significant progress had been made toward a broader agreement on long-term peace.

He added that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a workable basis for negotiations, with many points of contention already addressed.

The U.S. president said the two-week period would allow time to finalise a broader agreement, while emphasising that military objectives had already been met.

There was no immediate confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the proposed terms or ceasefire conditions.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with global markets closely watching developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for energy supplies.

Analysts say the pause could provide a window for diplomacy, though uncertainty remains over whether both sides will reach a lasting agreement.
