UN, Cambodia Deepen Ties to Promote Green Tourism
PHNOM PENH, April 7, 2026 — Cambodia and the United Nations have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the tourism sector, with a focus on advancing sustainable development goals and promoting inclusive growth.
Tourism Minister Huot Hak met with Vladanka Andreeva and her delegation on Monday to discuss expanding collaboration between the government and the United Nations.
During the meeting, both sides emphasised the importance of sustainable tourism development, including improving policy frameworks, promoting green tourism standards and strengthening climate resilience in key destinations.
They also highlighted the need to expand community-based tourism, enhance livelihoods in local communities and increase participation from youth and women.
The cooperation will include technical support to build human resource capacity in areas such as hospitality, digital skills and green practices to meet evolving tourism market demands.
Andreeva praised Cambodia’s infrastructure development and noted the country’s growing tourism potential, citing heritage sites such as Banteay Chhmar Temple as examples of its rich cultural assets.
Huot Hak welcomed continued UN support, underscoring Cambodia’s peace, political stability and economic growth as key drivers for attracting international tourists and investment.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in priority areas, including improving tourism data systems and leveraging digital technology to enhance sector management.
Cambodia joined the United Nations in 1955 and has since worked closely with the organisation on development initiatives, including support following the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements.
Officials said the partnership aims to ensure that tourism growth delivers tangible benefits to local communities while aligning with global sustainable development goals.
