PHNOM PENH, Feb 21, 2026 — Vietnam says it may be on the verge of a significant reset in its relationship with Washington. According to Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump told Vietnam’s Communist Party chief To Lam that he would lift restrictions limiting the country’s access to advanced American technologies.

The commitment was made during talks in Washington on Friday, where Mr. Lam is attending Mr. Trump’s inaugural Board of Peace meeting. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Vietnamese government said the US president also welcomed Hanoi’s efforts to narrow the trade imbalance between the two countries.

Few details have been made public. The statement did not say which technologies could be affected or when any change might be implemented.

Even so, the message from both sides points to closer engagement. Mr. Trump expressed support for deeper cooperation in economics, science and technology, while Mr. Lam called for further discussions to resolve outstanding trade issues. The statement added that Mr. Trump has accepted an invitation to visit Vietnam, signalling continued momentum in bilateral ties.
