Thai Woman Found Dead in Taiwan Workplace Freezer

TAIPEI, 21 September 2026 — A 36-year-old Thai woman has been found dead inside a freezer at a technology company in Taichung after police traced her disappearance to her Taiwanese boyfriend, who is suspected of killing her and transporting her body from Taipei.

The suspect, a 43-year-old Taiwanese man surnamed Wu, has been formally detained after prosecutors said he was suspected of homicide and posed risks of fleeing or destroying evidence.

The woman, identified by Taiwanese media as “Arth,” had travelled to Taiwan on September 2 and stayed at a hotel in the Ximending area of Taipei. She was scheduled to return to Thailand on September 14.

When her family could no longer contact her and she failed to return home, Taiwanese friends reported her disappearance to police.

Investigators reviewing hotel surveillance footage discovered that Wu visited the woman at her hotel on the night of September 12. He was later seen leaving the hotel in the early hours of September 13 carrying a large black suitcase.

Police said Wu placed the suitcase in his car and drove to Taichung, where he worked in an administrative and logistics role at a technology company. Investigators subsequently traced him to the workplace and obtained a search warrant.

In the early hours of September 19, police and prosecutors searched the workplace and found the woman’s body inside a freezer.

A preliminary examination indicated that she had died from neck compression, according to police. A further autopsy was scheduled to establish the precise cause and circumstances of death.

During questioning, Wu allegedly told investigators that the couple had argued after the woman said she wanted to end their relationship. He reportedly claimed that he lost his temper and killed her accidentally during the confrontation.

Police said the couple had been in a relationship for about a year after meeting while Wu was travelling in Thailand. They subsequently maintained a long-distance relationship, travelling between Taiwan and Thailand to see each other.

Local reports have raised questions about whether the killing was premeditated, noting that Wu had reportedly obtained a large suitcase and freezer before the incident. However, that aspect remains part of the ongoing investigation and has not been established by a court.

Following questioning, Wu was referred to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office. Prosecutors sought his detention, citing the seriousness of the alleged offence and concerns that he could flee or destroy evidence. The court subsequently approved the detention request.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the Thai woman’s death.

Wu has not been convicted, and the allegations against him remain subject to judicial proceedings.
