PHNOM PENH, Oct. 5, 2026 — Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen has congratulated Sonexay Siphandone on his election as the new President of the National Assembly of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

In a congratulatory letter dated October 5, 2026, Hun Sen expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Sonexay following his election during the second ordinary session of the 10th Lao National Assembly.

Sonexay, who previously served as Laos’ prime minister, was elected president of the National Assembly on Monday, succeeding Xaysomphone Phomvihane, who passed away in August. The Lao National Assembly also approved Saleumxay Kommasith as the country’s new prime minister.

Hun Sen Highlights Confidence in Sonexay

In his message, Hun Sen said Sonexay’s appointment to the senior legislative position reflected the confidence placed in his leadership abilities by his colleagues and the people of Laos.

Hun Sen expressed confidence that under Sonexay’s leadership, the Lao National Assembly would achieve further progress in institutional development and legislative effectiveness, fulfil its core responsibilities and contribute to Laos’ national development goals.

Cambodia-Laos Relations

Hun Sen also emphasised the longstanding relationship between Cambodia and Laos, expressing confidence that bilateral ties would continue to develop based on mutual respect, shared values and a strong commitment to bilateral cooperation.

He said he looked forward to working closely with Sonexay to further strengthen cooperation between the legislative institutions of the two countries.

Hun Sen particularly highlighted their shared aspirations for peace, stability and prosperity for the peoples of Cambodia and Laos, as well as for the wider region.

The Cambodian Senate president concluded his message by wishing Sonexay good health, happiness and success in carrying out his new responsibilities, while extending his wishes for greater well-being and prosperity for the Lao people.

Sonexay’s election is part of a broader leadership adjustment in Laos following the death of National Assembly President Xaysomphone in August. The October 5 parliamentary session also saw Saleumxay Kommasith, previously deputy prime minister, approved as the new prime minister.
