Canberra, 24 December 2025 — The Australian Government has expressed grave concern over the ongoing military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, warning of the rapid escalation in both the scale and intensity of the conflict, including the use of heavy and highly destructive weapons and the growing humanitarian impact on communities on both sides of the border.

In a statement issued on 24 December 2025, Australia conveyed its condolences to families who have lost loved ones and called on both parties to ensure the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure, and cultural heritage, in line with international humanitarian principles.

Canberra urged both sides to strictly comply with their obligations under international law, to de-escalate tensions without delay, and to take swift and effective measures to cease hostilities, including through the full implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration.

The Australian Government further strongly encouraged Cambodia and Thailand to engage in good faith negotiations during the General Border Committee Meeting, with the aim of achieving a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Australia also welcomed and supported ongoing diplomatic efforts by ASEAN, Malaysia, and the United States to help bring an end to the hostilities, reaffirming its commitment to regional peace, stability, and the rules-based international order.
