PHNOM PENH, Jan 29, 2026 — A cluster bomblet exploded during a clearance operation by Cambodian demining experts on Wednesday, but caused no injuries or damage, Cambodia’s mine action authority said.

Heng Ratana, Director-General of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), said the incident occurred on Jan 28 during an operation to remove unexploded ordnance in Banteay Meanchey province.

CMAC teams were using mechanical equipment to clear remnants of cluster munitions when one M46 cluster bomblet detonated at the site in Svay Chek district. Of 10 bomblets identified in the area, nine were successfully removed and neutralised, Heng Ratana said.

“The explosion did not cause any casualties among personnel or damage to equipment,” he said.

CMAC said the bomblets were remnants of munitions used by Thai forces, according to the agency’s assessment.

Heng Ratana also urged displaced residents who have recently returned to their homes in border areas to exercise extreme caution, warning that unexploded ordnance remains scattered across villages, farmland and residential zones.
