VIENTIANE, March 23, 2026 — Laos has confirmed its top leadership for a new five-year term and appointed a new vice president, consolidating political continuity following recent national elections.

The National Assembly re-elected President Thongloun Sisoulith and Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone for another term, extending the current leadership lineup through the 2026–2030 development period.

Lawmakers also elected Viengthong Siphandone as vice president, elevating a senior judicial figure and adding another member of the influential Siphandone family to the country’s top leadership ranks.

The leadership confirmations came during the opening session of the 10th National Assembly in Vientiane, following general elections held in February.

Thongloun secured an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary vote, reinforcing his position as the country’s most powerful political figure, while the reappointment of Sonexay signals policy continuity in economic management and governance.

Analysts say the reaffirmed leadership reflects stability within Laos’ political system, with the government expected to focus on economic development, regional integration and long-term policy implementation over the next five years.
