AOT Team Expands as Two Malaysian Officers Join
SIEM REAP, March 27, 2026 — Cambodia has welcomed additional ASEAN observers to support monitoring of the ceasefire with Thailand, as regional efforts intensify to ensure stability along the border.
Defence Ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata said two Malaysian military officers arrived at Siem Reap Angkor International Airport to join the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), which is tasked with overseeing implementation of ceasefire measures.
The officers — Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Amin bin Baharom and Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Erry bin Dul — will work under the AOT framework led by the Philippines in its role as ASEAN rotating chair.
Their mission includes observing, verifying and reporting on compliance with agreements reached between Cambodia and Thailand, particularly those outlined in the joint statement of the General Border Committee (GBC).
Cambodia reaffirmed its full support for the ASEAN Observer Team, stressing the importance of strengthening its role to ensure transparency, accountability and mutual trust between the two countries.
Phnom Penh said it remains committed to fully implementing the ceasefire agreement reached in December 2025, as well as earlier peace declarations, with the aim of restoring normalcy and ensuring long-term stability along the border.
Officials said the presence of ASEAN observers reflects regional cooperation efforts to maintain peace and prevent escalation following recent tensions.
