Air Quality in Cambodia Rated Good, Ministry Says default

PHNOM PENH, April 6, 2026 — Cambodia’s air quality remained at “good” levels in the first quarter of 2026, the government said, despite a slight increase in fine particulate matter.

The Ministry of Environment said data collected from 59 monitoring stations nationwide — including 12 in Phnom Penh and 47 across other provinces — showed air quality remained within acceptable public health standards.

Average PM2.5 concentrations rose slightly to 24.28 micrograms per cubic metre in the January–March period, compared with 23.09 micrograms per cubic metre in the same period last year, according to the ministry.

Officials said monitoring was conducted regularly, including mobile air quality checks in several provinces such as Pailin, Pursat, Koh Kong, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri.

The ministry emphasised transparency in reporting air quality data, noting that real-time information is available to the public through official platforms, including its website and mobile applications.

Authorities said efforts to maintain air quality include cooperation with relevant ministries and local authorities to curb illegal burning of agricultural waste, forest areas, garbage and plastic, which are major sources of pollution.

Public awareness campaigns, including initiatives to reduce plastic use and prevent open burning, are also being promoted as part of broader environmental protection efforts.

The government said it would continue monitoring conditions and issuing public health guidance as needed, while strengthening measures to prevent air pollution and ensure long-term environmental sustainability.
