PHNOM PENH, April 23, 2026 — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet told visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defence Minister Dong Jun that any border issues with Thailand must be resolved peacefully under international law and existing bilateral agreements, according to a statement published by Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, on his official Facebook page.

The remarks came during high-level talks in Phnom Penh as Cambodia and China launched their first “2+2” strategic dialogue involving foreign and defence ministers, underscoring growing political and security ties between the two countries.

Hun Manet briefed the Chinese delegation on recent developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border and reaffirmed Phnom Penh’s position that disputes should be settled through peaceful means, in accordance with international law, conventions, treaties and bilateral agreements already in force between the two neighbours.

Border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have remained sensitive since renewed frictions in 2025, with trade disruptions and diplomatic protests in several contested areas.

The Cambodian leader also reiterated support for the “One China” policy and thanked Beijing for its role in Cambodia’s socio-economic development, infrastructure expansion and public welfare.

Wang Yi conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, while praising Cambodia’s recent economic progress and describing bilateral ties as an “ironclad friendship” moving toward a shared future community.

Both sides discussed expanding cooperation in politics, trade, investment, defence, security, clean energy, transport infrastructure and agriculture, according to the statement.

The visit by Wang and Dong is seen as part of Beijing’s broader effort to deepen strategic ties in Southeast Asia amid rising regional competition and security uncertainty.

China remains Cambodia’s largest investor and one of its closest diplomatic partners, with cooperation spanning roads, airports, energy projects and military assistance.

Wednesday’s talks also highlighted the increasing importance of Cambodia-China defence cooperation, while Phnom Penh sought to reassure partners that its foreign policy remains anchored in peaceful dispute resolution and international legal frameworks.
