CHIANG MAI, April 24, 2026 — Police in northern Thailand have arrested a 41-year-old businessman after hidden cameras were discovered inside women’s toilets at a shopping mall in Chiang Mai, authorities said.

The suspect, identified only as Chris, was detained after investigators traced wireless signals from concealed cameras to his luxury residence, police said.

The case began on April 16 when a mall employee reported finding a camera hidden beneath a washbasin in a women’s restroom. A subsequent police inspection uncovered four covert cameras installed in multiple toilet areas.

Using technical surveillance methods, investigators tracked the devices to the suspect’s home and obtained a search warrant from Chiang Mai Provincial Court.

During the raid, officers seized 11 remotely operated surveillance cameras, two mobile phones and a laptop computer containing explicit recordings, police said.

Investigators said the suspect confessed to secretly installing the cameras over a period of about one month, disguising them in everyday objects including air-freshener containers.

He allegedly told officers the recordings were for personal viewing and not intended for sale or online distribution.

Police said the man was financially well-off and highly educated, adding that he claimed his interest in voyeuristic filming had developed after viewing related content on social media.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the charges, but Thai law includes penalties for privacy violations, obscene materials and unlawful surveillance.

The case has renewed concerns in Thailand over the misuse of inexpensive surveillance technology and privacy risks in public spaces. Police urged businesses to increase restroom inspections and encouraged the public to report suspicious devices.

Officials said digital evidence would be examined further as the investigation continues.
