NAYPYIDAW, April 26, 2026 — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing that Beijing would firmly support Myanmar in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.

Wang made the remarks during a visit to Naypyidaw, where he also said China supports Myanmar’s efforts to pursue development suited to its national conditions and backed by its people.

He added that, as this year marks the first year of Myanmar’s new government term, both sides should seize the opportunity to advance traditional ties and open a new chapter in bilateral relations.

The visit comes as China steps up engagement with neighbouring countries amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and seeks to present itself as a reliable regional partner.

Before travelling to Myanmar, Wang visited Cambodia and Thailand as part of a regional diplomatic tour.

Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as Myanmar’s president earlier this month following a general election. Myanmar has remained politically fragile since the 2021 military takeover that plunged the country into prolonged conflict.
