BANGKOK, May 1, 2026 — Conflicting accounts of a border incident between Thailand and Cambodia have raised questions over Thailand’s assertion that only “warning firecrackers” were used, despite reports of gunfire during a diplomatic visit attended by international observers.

The incident occurred on April 29 during a pre-coordinated visit by foreign military attachés to areas near the Cambodia–Thailand border, including locations around O’Smach and Surin province.

Thailand’s military said its troops deployed three warning firecrackers after Cambodian personnel approached a barbed-wire defensive line, insisting no live ammunition was used.

However, Cambodian authorities alleged that Thai forces fired multiple rounds using rifles and heavier weapons, including M16 assault rifles and M79 grenade launchers, over a period of more than 30 minutes.

The sharply differing accounts have drawn attention to the presence of foreign military attachés during the visit, prompting questions over whether multiple international observers could have misidentified the nature of the sounds and events on the ground.

Thai defence officials rejected the allegations, stating that a joint verification by army units confirmed only non-lethal warning devices were used, and described the situation as controlled.

Cambodian officials said the incident contradicted the spirit of a ceasefire agreement reached in December 2025 and raised concerns about stability along the border.

Thailand has indicated it will file a formal protest, alleging that Cambodian personnel breached prior coordination arrangements during the visit.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the two neighbours despite existing agreements aimed at maintaining peace, with differing narratives underscoring the challenges of verifying events in sensitive border areas.
