Chinese National Held in Thailand for Alleged Cyber Theft of Game Data
BANGKOK, May 7, 2026 — Thai authorities have arrested a Chinese programmer accused of hacking into the database of a major gaming company in China and stealing source code to develop a copycat game, in a case highlighting growing regional cooperation against cybercrime.
The suspect, identified only by the surname Wang, 34, was arrested in Bangkok’s Watthana district during a joint operation involving Thai police and the Lancang-Mekong Integrated Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Centre.
Authorities said Wang allegedly accessed the gaming company’s systems without authorization, stealing source code and internal system structures that were later used to develop a competing online game. Chinese investigators estimated damages at more than 1.8 million yuan, or roughly 9 million baht ($240,000).
Police said Wang had established a front company to process online payments and attract users by offering in-game items at prices below market rates.
Investigators tracked the suspect to a luxury condominium on Sukhumvit Road, where he had reportedly been staying after entering Thailand on a tourist visa.
Thai immigration authorities said his permission to remain in the country had been revoked and that he is currently being held at an Immigration Bureau detention facility pending deportation to China.
Officials said the case underscores increasing cooperation between regional law enforcement agencies in tackling cybercrime and intellectual property theft.
Authorities added that the investigation also highlighted vulnerabilities in digital payment systems and online gaming infrastructure, particularly in cross-border operations.
Wang is expected to face charges in China related to unauthorized computer access and intellectual property violations once deported.
Cybersecurity experts say the incident may prompt gaming companies to strengthen protections around source code, payment systems and user databases as online gaming markets continue to expand across Asia.
