Cambodia Focuses on Family Welfare and Social Protection, PM Says
PHNOM PENH, May 12, 2026 — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said resilient family economies are essential for building strong human capital and sustaining long-term peace and development, ahead of the International Day of Families on May 15.
In a message marking the 32nd anniversary of the observance, Hun Manet described family economic resilience as a key foundation for creating an inclusive, sustainable and stable society.
This year’s celebration, organised by Cambodia’s Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, is being held under the theme: “Investing in Family Economic Resilience for National Prosperity and Peace.”
The prime minister said strong family economies help develop high-quality human resources and social well-being, which he described as critical national assets for preserving peace, generating economic and cultural value and encouraging innovation.
Hun Manet also praised Cambodian families — especially grandparents, parents and siblings — for their sacrifices and commitment to lawfulness, morality, tolerance and social harmony.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding Cambodia’s social protection system under a principle of “leaving no citizen behind,” with a focus on poor and vulnerable households.
The government’s support programmes include cash assistance for pregnant women, children under two years old, elderly citizens, people with disabilities and students from poor families, as well as support for households affected by HIV/AIDS.
Hun Manet said authorities were also extending assistance to new vulnerable groups, including pregnant female prisoners and children under two living with their mothers in prison through dedicated cash support programmes.
The prime minister further highlighted special intervention measures introduced during the Cambodia-Thailand border crisis to support displaced families, migrant workers and labourers affected by the tensions.
He also praised Cambodian Red Cross for cooperating with the government in vocational training, promoting family values and women’s rights, preventing domestic violence and human trafficking, and supporting disaster response efforts.
Hun Manet called on Cambodian families and communities to continue strengthening unity, moral education and social responsibility while urging ministries and development partners to intensify efforts to promote family values and social cohesion nationwide.
