PHNOM PENH, May 26, 2026 — Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration has rejected as false and fabricated reports circulating on Chinese social media claiming the country had closed its airports and tightened entry restrictions for foreign nationals.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the department denied reports published on WeChat alleging that Phnom Penh International Airport had temporarily suspended all international arrivals and that land border checkpoints would impose stricter controls beginning May 26.

The online posts also claimed that all foreigners under the age of 40 would be denied entry into Cambodia regardless of whether they held visas or business documents.

Cambodian immigration authorities categorically rejected the claims, stating that no such policy or directive had ever been issued.

Officials said immigration police had not received any instruction from government leaders to prohibit foreigners under 40 from entering the country.

The department clarified that Cambodia’s current immigration measures focus only on strengthening security procedures and preventing illegal entry by foreign nationals, in line with government policy.

Authorities stressed that foreign tourists, investors, businesspeople, traders and migrant workers continue to be welcomed and supported in travelling to Cambodia.

The statement added that all major international checkpoints, including airports and land border crossings, remain fully operational under normal procedures without any changes affecting travel into or out of the country.

The clarification comes as Cambodia prepares to launch a temporary visa exemption programme for Chinese nationals travelling from China. Under the scheme, Chinese visitors will be allowed to stay in Cambodia for up to 14 days without a visa between June 15 and October 15, 2026, as part of efforts to boost tourism arrivals during the country’s “green season” campaign.
