Vietnam Calls for Peaceful Resolution of Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute
PHNOM PENH, June 24, 2026 – Vietnam supports the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand and a peaceful resolution of their border dispute, according to Cambodian military officials following talks between senior military commanders from the two countries.
According to a statement released by the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), Cambodian Commander-in-Chief Gen. Vong Pisen met Lt. Gen. Vu Hong Son, commander of the Air Defence Command of the Vietnam People’s Army, on June 22 to discuss bilateral military cooperation and regional security issues.
During the meeting, Vu Hong Son said Vietnam was closely monitoring developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border and fully supported efforts to resolve the dispute through peaceful means in order to maintain lasting peace and stability in the region, the statement said.
The Vietnamese commander also highlighted the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Vietnam, saying cooperation and solidarity among Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos remained an important foundation for regional peace and development.
The two sides also discussed defence cooperation, with Vu noting that Cambodian military officers had received training in Vietnam, contributing to closer ties and improved human resource development between the armed forces of the two countries.
Vong Pisen expressed appreciation for what he described as the growing defence relationship between Cambodia and Vietnam and thanked Vietnam for its continued assistance, particularly in military training and capacity building.
According to the RCAF statement, both sides agreed to expand cooperation through exchanges of military delegations, personnel training, information sharing, cross-border crime prevention and disaster response.
Vong Pisen also thanked Vietnam for supporting the ceasefire and peaceful efforts to resolve the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, as well as for contributing military officers to the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). He called on Vietnam to continue supporting the observer mission to help ensure implementation of the ceasefire and promote long-term peace, stability and security along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
