Cambodia, Laos Leaders Back Deeper Cooperation Across Sectors

PHNOM PENH, 12 August 2026 — Cambodia and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors, with both sides seeking greater benefits for their peoples.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting in Vientiane on Tuesday between Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary and Lao President and Lao People’s Revolutionary Party General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith.

Khuon Sudary was in Laos leading a high-level Cambodian National Assembly delegation to pay respects to former Lao National Assembly President Xaysomphone Phomvihane, whose death was described by Cambodian officials as a major loss for Laos and Cambodia.

Thongloun expressed his appreciation for Khuon Sudary’s visit and conveyed his thanks to Cambodian leaders, including Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet, for their messages of condolence to the Lao Party, government and people.

The Lao president said the solidarity between Cambodia and Laos was deeply rooted in the longstanding ties between their leaders and peoples, who have supported each other during difficult times.

Thongloun also praised Cambodia’s development and called for continued efforts to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries, particularly people-to-people relations.

Khuon Sudary reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to maintaining the two countries’ traditional and special friendship, as well as their comprehensive, long-term strategic partnership, saying stronger cooperation would bring greater benefits to people on both sides.

She also congratulated Thongloun on his continued leadership as General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of Laos following his re-election for another five-year term.

The meeting underscored the two neighbouring countries’ intention to further expand bilateral cooperation while maintaining their longstanding political and people-to-people ties.
