Hun Sen Praises Kem Sokha’s Daughter as National Asset

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 18, 2026 — Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has praised Kem Monovithya, daughter of former opposition leader Kem Sokha, describing her as a “good human resource” for Cambodia, in his latest public remarks following a meeting with her and her family.

In a post on his social media account on Aug. 16, Hun Sen said Kem Sokha had visited him at his home several weeks earlier before travelling to meet troops and displaced people.

He said Kem Sokha later returned with his wife and daughter to visit him again, with their meeting lasting about three hours, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Hun Sen said he spent much of the meeting speaking with Kem Monovithya and praised her capabilities.

“She is truly a good human resource for the nation,” Hun Sen said, referring to Kem Monovithya.

The remarks come days after Kem Monovithya held a meeting with Prime Minister Hun Manet in Phnom Penh on Aug. 14.

Following that meeting, Hun Manet said he had received her as a member of a new generation of politicians and indicated that there were areas where they could work together for the national interest, particularly on the international stage.

The latest developments mark a notable series of high-level contacts between the Hun family and Kem Sokha’s family following the former opposition leader’s royal pardon earlier this year.
