British Man, 90, Dies After Fall at Phuket Villa
PHUKET, August 20, 2026 — A 90-year-old British man has been found dead at a villa in Phuket after apparently becoming trapped in a chair, with police investigating the circumstances of his death.
The man was found by his housekeeper on Aug. 16 at the villa in Choeng Thale, according to police. Forensic officers estimated that he had been dead for around four to six hours.
Police said the man was found in an unusual position, with both arms raised and his legs pointing upwards. His phone and wallet were on the floor nearby, while a packet of biscuits and an uncapped bottle of water were found on a table.
Investigators believe he may have leaned back while eating and drinking, possibly suffering a serious back injury that left him unable to move himself upright.
Police are also examining the possibility of positional asphyxia, in which a person’s body position restricts breathing.
Police Lieutenant Uratthaya Raengtakorn said the housekeeper had seen the man in good condition that morning before returning later in the afternoon and finding him dead.
“There was no unusual smell or anything suspicious,” she said, adding that there was no indication another person had been involved.
Police said the man had lived in Thailand for some time and appeared generally healthy, although officers did not know whether he had any underlying medical conditions.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death. Investigators are also examining whether prolonged positioning may have caused blood to pool in his head.
The case highlights potential safety concerns for elderly foreign residents living independently or relying on household staff who may only visit at scheduled times.
A UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said the government was supporting the man’s family following his death in Thailand.
