Around 30,000 Cambodian Civilians Remain in Temporary Shelters
ODDAR MEANCHEY, April 26, 2026 — Around 30,000 Cambodian civilians remain displaced and housed in temporary shelters after border unrest, with some areas still classified as unsafe or with homes damaged by military activity, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry said 34,120 people had yet to return home, including 17,607 women and 11,345 children.
It added that 18 more displaced residents in Siem Reap province had returned to their homes, bringing the total number of returnees to more than 610,000 out of over 640,000 people affected overall, or nearly 95%.
Public services also remain disrupted in several provinces bordering Thailand.
In Oddar Meanchey province, eight schools and five hospitals or health centres remain closed. In Banteay Meanchey, five schools and one health facility are still suspended, while in Preah Vihear, seven schools and two health facilities remain shut.
The ministry called on Thailand to halt what it described as unilateral illegal actions affecting Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It also urged both sides to accelerate the work of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to resume border measurement and demarcation in line with previous bilateral agreements and historical treaties.
