Australian Athlete Dies During Family Vacation in Thailand
KOH SAMUI, June 13, 2026 — Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton has died while on a family holiday in Thailand, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from across Australia’s athletics community.
Stapleton, 25, from Melbourne, passed away while visiting Koh Samui with family members. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been publicly disclosed. She had celebrated her 25th birthday on June 1, only days before her passing.
A prominent athlete in Victorian athletics, Stapleton was widely known for her performances in the Stawell Gift, one of Australia’s most prestigious professional foot races. She finished third in the 2025 Stawell Gift and again reached the final in 2026, establishing herself as one of the country’s emerging sprint talents.
News of her death spread while her family remained overseas. A fundraising campaign established to assist with repatriating her body to Australia had raised nearly A$100,000 by Friday. Organisers described the family as facing “immeasurable grief” following the sudden loss.
Tributes quickly emerged from relatives, friends, coaches and sporting organisations.
In a video tribute shared with Australia’s ABC, her brother Joel Stapleton described her as more than a sister, calling her his best friend and a constant source of support.
“For those that knew her, you know how lucky you were to have her in your life. Her smile was so bright that wherever she went you knew she was there,” he said.
Her partner, Tyler Gray, also paid tribute on social media, describing Stapleton as the greatest thing that had happened in his life and expressing his struggle to come to terms with her death.
Former coach Mark Thomas said he was devastated by the news and remembered Stapleton as one of his favourite athletes to coach, praising her dedication and positive attitude.
The Victorian Athletic League described Stapleton as a valued member of the athletics community whose warmth and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on those around her. Athletics Australia likewise paid tribute, remembering her as a bright, kind and uplifting presence who was always willing to support others.
Outside athletics, Stapleton worked in childcare, where colleagues also remembered her for her compassion, kindness and commitment to helping children and families.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Stapleton’s family during this difficult time.
Thai authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances of her death, and no official cause of death has been announced. Investigations are continuing.
Her passing has left Australia’s athletics community mourning the loss of a talented competitor whose energy, positivity and passion for sport touched many lives.
