Bangkok Muslims Demand Apology From Transwoman Over Quran Comments
BANGKOK, May 11, 2026 — A dispute over alleged remarks about the Quran made during a social media livestream sparked protests and heated online debate in Thailand after a group of Muslims gathered at a restaurant in Bangkok demanding a public apology from a transwoman known as Lor.
The incident unfolded in Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng area after criticism spread online over comments allegedly made by Lor during a livestream discussion.
According to reports circulating on Thai social media, the controversy began after another online personality, identified as Freece, criticised Lor and friends over their appearance and behaviour, which some viewers said conflicted with Islamic teachings.
During the livestream, Lor was accused of making remarks considered offensive toward the Quran and altering religious wording, prompting backlash from members of Thailand’s Muslim community.
As criticism intensified, the president of the Yamilul Mosque reportedly arranged a meeting with Lor to address the dispute.
However, news of the meeting drew a large crowd to the restaurant where discussions were taking place. Some protesters demanded further acts of apology, including shaving her hair and physically punishing herself, actions which Lor later carried out under pressure.
Thai police intervened to escort Lor away from the scene after tensions escalated and some protesters attempted to approach her while officers led her to a police vehicle.
The incident quickly triggered broader debate online in Thailand over religious respect, freedom of expression, gender identity discrimination and the limits of public pressure in resolving sensitive disputes.
Authorities have not announced any legal action related either to the original livestream comments or to the confrontation outside the restaurant.
