Cambodia and Thailand Support Conciliators’ Request for More Time
PHNOM PENH, 19 July 2026 — Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to a request by four independent conciliators for additional time to consider the appointment of the chairperson of the Conciliation Commission established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to address maritime differences between the two countries.
The confirmation came in a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in response to media inquiries regarding the appointment process.
According to the statement, the four independent conciliators requested additional time to carefully consider who should be appointed as chairperson of the Conciliation Commission, and both Cambodia and Thailand agreed to the proposal.
The ministry said the extension is modest and entirely appropriate given the significance of the appointment and the conciliation proceedings as a whole.
It added that the additional time will have no impact on any prescribed timeline or procedural step under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The spokesperson said the request reflects the rigorous and thorough process being undertaken by the conciliators and expressed appreciation for their diligence while reaffirming Cambodia’s continued confidence in the conciliation process.
The ministry also reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to advancing the peaceful resolution of its maritime differences with Thailand based on international law.
