Cambodia Reaffirms UNCLOS Position in Talks With Thailand at United Nations
NEW YORK, May 28, 2026 — Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn met with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow on the sidelines of the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate in New York on May 26, according to a press release issued by Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The meeting followed a trilateral discussion between Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines held during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu earlier this month, where leaders tasked the foreign ministers of Cambodia and Thailand with exploring confidence-building measures and possible paths forward regarding border issues.
According to the Cambodian foreign ministry, both sides held a “frank and open exchange of views” on the border situation between the two neighboring countries.
During the talks, Prak Sokhonn reiterated Cambodia’s position regarding the initiation of compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He also called for the “full and effective implementation, in good faith and with sincerity,” of the Joint Statement signed on December 27, 2025.
The Cambodian foreign minister further informed his Thai counterpart that Cambodia stands ready to cooperate with Thailand in implementing measures agreed upon by the two prime ministers during their meeting in Cebu, with the aim of rebuilding trust and pursuing a “just and lasting solution.”
The press release added that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close and regular communication as efforts continue to ease tensions and advance peaceful dialogue.
The meeting comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between Cambodia and Thailand following border tensions and ceasefire arrangements reached in late 2025.
