PHNOM PENH, April 11, 2026 — Cambodia is losing around $50 million in state revenue each month as it seeks to cushion the impact of rising global fuel prices on citizens, Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Saturday.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of the Funan Techo Canal project, Hun Manet said the government has been absorbing costs to stabilise domestic fuel prices and ease the financial burden on households and businesses.

The Southeast Asian nation has implemented a range of measures, including tax adjustments and subsidies, to mitigate the impact of volatile global oil markets.

Cambodia, which relies heavily on imported fuel, has been particularly exposed to fluctuations in international energy prices, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains.

The prime minister said the government would continue to balance fiscal pressures with the need to support economic stability and protect citizens from rising living costs.

The Funan Techo Canal project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving inland water transport and boosting trade, is part of broader efforts to strengthen Cambodia’s economic resilience.
