HANOI, June 9, 2026 — Cambodia and Vietnam have reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the connection of the Phnom Penh–Bavet Expressway and the Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai Expressway, a major infrastructure project expected to strengthen economic integration and regional connectivity between the two neighboring countries.

The commitment was made during bilateral talks between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung on June 8 in Hanoi during the Cambodian leader’s official visit to Vietnam and participation in the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum.

According to information released following the meeting, both leaders discussed ways to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including politics, trade and investment, security and defense, education, healthcare, tourism, culture, energy and infrastructure connectivity.

The two sides emphasized the importance of expediting efforts to connect the Phnom Penh–Bavet and Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai expressways, while also promoting greater waterway connectivity and expanding direct flight links between the two countries.

Officials noted that feasibility studies for the expressway connection project have already been completed, with discussions now focusing on project costs and financing arrangements.

The Phnom Penh–Bavet Expressway is planned to stretch approximately 135 kilometers from Phnom Penh to Bavet City on the Cambodia-Vietnam border. The four-lane expressway will have a width of 25.5 meters and pass through Kandal, Prey Veng and Svay Rieng provinces before reaching the border crossing.

Once completed and linked with Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai Expressway, the route is expected to significantly reduce travel times, facilitate trade and investment flows, and enhance transport connectivity between Cambodia, Vietnam and the wider ASEAN region.

The commitment reflects growing efforts by both governments to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation and improve cross-border infrastructure as part of their broader vision for long-term regional development.
