BEIJING, April 30 — Chinese police said they have taken custody of a suspect in a major cross-border online gambling and fraud case following his extradition from Thailand, as authorities step up efforts to dismantle scam networks operating in Southeast Asia.

The suspect, identified by the surname Huang, was handed over by Thai authorities and returned to China to face legal proceedings, according to police in the northern city of Tianjin.

Investigators allege that Huang was involved in operating a large-scale online gambling platform and coordinating a network that recruited participants through promises of high returns.

The operation is believed to have generated more than 500 million yuan ($69 million), with activities linked to multiple locations in the region, including Cambodia.

Chinese authorities said the case forms part of a broader crackdown on transnational online scams and illegal gambling networks.

Security analysts have increasingly pointed to Southeast Asia as a hub for such operations, often involving cross-border coordination and the use of digital platforms to target victims.

Police said investigations are continuing to identify additional suspects and dismantle the wider network associated with the case.
