Chinese Fugitive Arrested in Bangkok Over Alleged Insurance Investment Scheme
BANGKOK, October 22, 2026 — Thai immigration police have arrested a 41-year-old Chinese businessman identified only as Ma, who is wanted by Chinese authorities over alleged fraud and theft involving losses estimated at 220 million baht.
Ma was arrested in Bangkok’s Rama 9 area after Chinese authorities requested assistance in locating him, the Immigration Bureau said on October 20.
More Than 100 People Reportedly Affected
According to Thai immigration police, Ma was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by China. He is accused of persuading people to invest in an insurance company through an alleged scheme involving fraudulent insurance premiums.
Investigators also allege that he transferred profits belonging to other investment account holders into his own bank account before fleeing China.
More than 100 people in Beijing were reportedly affected, with the financial losses estimated at approximately 220 million baht.
Thai immigration police said the request to investigate and arrest Ma was forwarded by the Chinese Embassy in Thailand through the Royal Thai Police Foreign Affairs Division.
Immigration Bureau Leads Arrest Operation
The operation was ordered by Immigration Bureau Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Noppasin Poolsawat, with senior immigration officials overseeing the investigation and arrest.
Officers traced Ma to the Rama 9 neighbourhood, a major residential and commercial district in Bangkok with both Thai and foreign residents.
Ma is being detained while authorities review his immigration status, with deportation proceedings to China expected to follow.
The allegations against Ma remain subject to the relevant legal proceedings.
