Chinese Student Rescued After ‘Virtual Kidnapping’ Scam in Thailand
BANGKOK, June 3, 2026 — Thai police have rescued a 21-year-old Chinese student who was allegedly manipulated by a transnational scam syndicate into staging her own kidnapping as part of a virtual extortion scheme targeting her family in Hong Kong.
Authorities said the victim, identified only as Ms Wang, was found safe after scammers posing as law enforcement officials convinced her that she was under investigation and needed to follow their instructions.
According to police, the syndicate isolated the student from family and friends, ordered her to cut off communication with others and persuaded her to record images and videos suggesting that she had been abducted.
The scammers then allegedly sent the materials to her family in Hong Kong and demanded ransom payments in exchange for her release.
Investigators said the scheme followed a pattern commonly known as a “virtual kidnapping,” in which criminals use psychological manipulation, intimidation and impersonation tactics to convince victims that they are in legal or physical danger.
Police launched an investigation after receiving reports concerning the student’s disappearance and eventually located her before any physical harm occurred.
Authorities said Ms Wang had remained under the control of the scammers through constant communication and threats, believing she was complying with instructions from legitimate authorities.
Thai police are continuing to investigate the transnational criminal network responsible for the operation and are coordinating with foreign law enforcement agencies to identify additional suspects and potential victims.
Officials warned the public to be cautious of calls or messages from individuals claiming to be government officials, police officers or prosecutors demanding secrecy, money transfers or isolation from family members.
