COVID-19 Returns to Thai Prison as Buriram Facility Halts Inmate Visits
BURIRAM, Sep. 1, 2026 — Thailand has temporarily suspended both in-person and online visits for inmates at a prison in Nang Rong District, Buriram Province, after an inmate tested positive for COVID-19.
The Nang Rong District Prison announced that visits to inmates housed in the newly admitted section and Zone 1 will be suspended from August 31 to September 30, 2026, as a precautionary measure following the detection of the infection.
According to Thai media outlet Khaosod, the prison said the suspension could be extended if the outbreak situation has not returned to normal.
Family members and relatives will, however, still be allowed to send money and approved personal necessities to inmates as usual during the suspension period.
Thailand has also recorded a significant number of COVID-19 cases this year. According to the country’s Department of Disease Control, Thailand reported 95,357 COVID-19 cases and 14 deaths between January 1 and August 28, 2026.
Authorities have reportedly observed an increase in infections over the past month, prompting renewed precautions in certain settings, including the affected prison facility.
