FBI Commends Cambodia’s Efforts to Combat Cyber Scams
PHNOM PENH, 22 July 2026 — Cambodia and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation, with a focus on combating cyber-enabled fraud, transnational crime and drug trafficking, during talks between Prime Minister Hun Manet and FBI Director Kash Patel.
Patel met Hun Manet at the Peace Palace on Wednesday, where the two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation on law enforcement and discussed ways to deepen collaboration between Cambodian and U.S. authorities.
During the meeting, Patel thanked the Cambodian government for its close partnership with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and praised Cambodia’s efforts and operations to combat cyber-enabled fraud.
He said online scam operations are a global challenge rather than the responsibility of any single country, stressing that stronger regional and international cooperation—not assigning blame—is essential to effectively combat the crime.
Patel reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to continuing cooperation with Cambodia’s law enforcement agencies through partnership, operational support and collaboration. He also expressed confidence that U.S.-Cambodia relations would continue to develop across multiple sectors.
Hun Manet welcomed what he described as the positive momentum in bilateral relations, highlighting cooperation in economic affairs, trade, investment, defence and security.
The prime minister reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to working closely with the United States in tackling transnational crime, drug trafficking and cyber-enabled fraud.
Hun Manet also announced that Cambodia will host an international conference on combating cyber-enabled fraud in September 2026, aimed at strengthening international cooperation in addressing what he described as a regional and global security challenge.
He thanked the United States for its continued cooperation in intelligence and information sharing, as well as capacity-building programs for Cambodia’s law enforcement agencies.
Before concluding the meeting, Hun Manet and Patel exchanged views on future priorities for Cambodia-U.S. security cooperation, emphasizing the importance of continued information sharing, training and institutional capacity building to combat transnational crime, narcotics trafficking and cyber-enabled fraud.
