Hun Sen Extends Congratulations to Timor-Leste on National Day
PHNOM PENH, May 20, 2026 — Cambodia’s acting head of state Hun Sen sent a congratulatory message to Timor-Leste President José Manuel Ramos-Horta on Tuesday to mark the 24th anniversary of the Southeast Asian nation’s independence day, while reaffirming Cambodia’s support for closer bilateral and regional cooperation.
In a letter released by Cambodian authorities, Hun Sen extended “sincere congratulations and best wishes” to Ramos-Horta, the government and the people of Timor-Leste on the national occasion.
Hun Sen praised Timor-Leste’s development and resilience since independence, describing the country’s achievements as an inspiration rooted in the determination and strength of its people and leadership.
“I firmly believe that under your wise leadership, Timor-Leste will continue to progress and prosper,” Hun Sen wrote, describing the country as a longstanding friend and committed partner of Cambodia.
The Cambodian leader also highlighted Timor-Leste’s recent accession to ASEAN, saying the move created an important opportunity for both countries to work more closely together in promoting peace and prosperity in the region amid evolving global circumstances.
Hun Sen said he looked forward to strengthening cooperation and advancing mutual interests between the two nations through closer engagement within ASEAN and other regional frameworks.
Timor-Leste formally joined ASEAN in recent years after a prolonged application process, becoming the bloc’s newest member as Southeast Asian countries seek deeper regional integration and cooperation.
