Hun Sen Says Cambodia Places High Importance on Longstanding Ties With Myanmar
PHNOM PENH, Sept. 11, 2026 — Cambodian Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia attaches high importance to its longstanding relationship with Myanmar, as he hosted a state banquet in honour of Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing during his state visit to Cambodia.
Speaking at the banquet on Friday, Hun Sen warmly welcomed Min Aung Hlaing and his high-level delegation, describing the visit as an important opportunity to reinforce the longstanding friendship and strengthen the close partnership between the two countries.
Hun Sen congratulated Min Aung Hlaing on his election as Myanmar’s president and expressed confidence that, under his leadership, Myanmar would achieve the priorities set by his government.
“The state visit … is a testament to our longstanding friendship, strengthens the bonds of friendship and promotes the close partnership between our two countries,” Hun Sen said.
He added that the visit had provided an opportunity for the two sides to hold in-depth discussions and exchange views on bilateral, regional and international cooperation, with the aim of reaching greater understanding and producing tangible benefits for both countries and their peoples.
Hun Sen stressed that Cambodia places high importance on its long-term relationship with Myanmar, noting that the two countries have maintained frequent communication and close connections while preserving what he described as a warm traditional friendship and strong solidarity.
Cambodia and Myanmar marked the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, with the two countries having established official diplomatic ties in 1955.
The Cambodian acting head of state also highlighted the expansion of bilateral cooperation across a range of areas, including trade, investment, tourism, culture, education, information and people-to-people exchanges, as well as cooperation within regional and international frameworks.
Hun Sen expressed confidence that continued joint efforts, based on solidarity and mutual respect within ASEAN and on the international stage, would help the two countries further advance their longstanding relationship.
The remarks came during Min Aung Hlaing’s two-day state visit to Cambodia from September 11–12, his first state visit to the Kingdom since becoming president. During the visit, he has held talks with Hun Sen and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.
The two sides have also discussed regional and international issues of common interest, with both governments presenting the visit as an opportunity to reinforce Cambodia-Myanmar friendship and cooperation.
