BANGKOK, May 20, 2026 — Award-winning Irish filmmaker Max Hendrickson and his Czech girlfriend have died in a road crash in Thailand while travelling on a scooter, according to Irish media reports and officials.

Hendrickson, 20, from Cabra in north Dublin, was a second-year film student at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire.

He gained national recognition after being named Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year in 2023 at age 17 for his animated short film “The Tell-Tale Heart,” inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Hendrickson had created 10 short films since the age of 12, screened at more than 100 film festivals and won over 40 awards internationally.

His work was also featured at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and broadcast on RTÉ as part of the Fresh International Film Festival programme.

Irish political figures and members of the film industry paid tribute following news of the deaths.

Labour lawmaker Marie Sherlock described Hendrickson as “an incredibly talented filmmaker,” while Sinn Féin councillor Séamas McGrattan said local residents were shocked by the loss of “such a young, talented man.”

Fresh International Film Festival director Jayne Foley had previously praised Hendrickson’s growth as a filmmaker and storyteller, predicting he would play an important role in Ireland’s film and animation industries.

The Irish Independent reported that Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance.

Thai authorities have not yet publicly released further details about the crash or identified the location where the accident occurred.
