Korea-Cambodia Joint Task Force Expands Focus to Cybercrime and Drugs
PHNOM PENH, May 12, 2026 — South Korean police will train 10 Cambodian police officers in advanced techniques to combat online fraud and transnational cybercrime under a regional security cooperation programme launched this month, according to South Korean media reports.
The programme, organised under the “K-Police Wave” initiative, will provide specialised training to law enforcement officers from Cambodia and Laos focused on online scam investigations and digital crime suppression.
According to reports by The Korea Times, the Cambodian participants include 10 investigators from the Cambodia-South Korea joint task force and intelligence units dealing with cases involving South Korean nationals in Cambodia.
The officers are expected to undergo training at the Korean National Police University and other facilities through the end of May.
South Korean authorities said the curriculum was designed to address increasingly sophisticated methods used by transnational criminal groups operating in Southeast Asia.
The training will focus on advanced investigative techniques including tracing illicit financial proceeds, monitoring cryptocurrency transactions and conducting digital forensic analysis.
Officials said participants would also receive specialised instruction in investigating online gambling networks, digital fraud operations and narcotics-related crimes, as well as legal procedures for international law enforcement cooperation.
The Korean National Police Agency said the initiative aimed to build stronger professional networks to facilitate fugitive arrests and improve real-time intelligence sharing between regional law enforcement agencies.
South Korean authorities said they hoped the programme would strengthen long-term security partnerships with Southeast Asian countries through the transfer of policing expertise and digital forensic capabilities.
Cambodia and South Korea established a joint task force in late 2025 focused on protecting South Korean nationals and investigating online scam operations involving Korean citizens in Cambodia.
The cooperation has since expanded to include online gambling and drug-related offences, officials said.
