Outgoing German Ambassador Says Cambodia Is a Safe Tourist Destination
PHNOM PENH, 15 July 2026 — Outgoing German Ambassador Stefan Messerer has described Cambodia as a safe tourist destination while highlighting the untapped potential for stronger cooperation between Cambodia and Germany in tourism, trade, agriculture and investment.
Prime Minister Hun Manet received Ambassador Messerer for a farewell call at the Peace Palace on 14 July, marking the conclusion of the ambassador’s diplomatic mission in Cambodia.
During the meeting, Messerer expressed satisfaction with the steady progress in Cambodia-Germany bilateral relations and thanked the Cambodian government for its support throughout his tenure.
He praised the strong cooperation between the two countries, particularly in political relations through the exchange of high-level visits, and described Cambodia and Germany as open and sincere partners committed to further strengthening bilateral ties.
The ambassador said both countries still have significant potential to expand cooperation in economic and trade relations, agriculture, agro-industry and tourism, stressing that Cambodia is a safe destination for international visitors.
Hun Manet commended Messerer for his active diplomatic efforts in strengthening friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Germany during his tenure.
The prime minister welcomed the continued expansion of bilateral cooperation, particularly in education and human resource development, expressing confidence that collaboration in these sectors would continue to grow.
Hun Manet also agreed that both countries have considerable opportunities to increase bilateral trade and economic cooperation by promoting stronger business-to-business partnerships.
On agriculture and agro-industry, the prime minister said Cambodia and Germany could deepen cooperation, highlighting the Cambodian government’s policies to support value-added processing of strategic agricultural products, including cashew nuts and rice, for export to international markets.
Before concluding the meeting, Hun Manet also briefed the outgoing ambassador on the latest developments regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border situation.
He reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving the border issue peacefully in accordance with international law, existing conventions, treaties and bilateral agreements.
Messerer reiterated Germany’s support for the peaceful settlement of the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute in line with international law.
