NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, June 8, 2026 — A six-year-old boy has died after being attacked by a pet monkey tethered outside a family home in southern Thailand, authorities said.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 6 in Thep Ratcha subdistrict of Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The victim, identified as six-year-old Ekkarat, known as Nathan, suffered severe injuries after the monkey reportedly lunged at him as he walked past the animal.

The child sustained serious wounds to his chest, lung and leg and was rushed to Sichon Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, he later died from his injuries.

According to investigators, the monkey had been kept for several years by the boy’s grandfather, who owns a grocery shop in the village. The animal was raised as a pet and was not used for coconut harvesting.

Authorities said the monkey was tethered beside the house using a long rope attached between two trees, allowing it to move along a wooden beam within a restricted area.

Preliminary findings indicate that the boy was passing near the animal when it suddenly attacked him, inflicting fatal injuries.

The incident has shocked residents of Ban Khao Yuan Thao village, where the monkey had been known to locals for many years. Police have documented the case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Authorities said the monkey remains at the property while officials continue their inquiries. No decision regarding the animal’s future had been announced as of Sunday.
