‘Phra Boonsin’ Prepares to Leave Monkhood and Return to Thai Army on December 1
BANGKOK, November 7, 2026 — Former Thai Second Army Region Commander General Boonsin Padklang is preparing to leave monkhood later this month and return to military duties as an adviser to the Royal Thai Army Commander-in-Chief from December 1, 2026, according to Thai media reports.
Khaosod and other Thai media reported on November 5 that Boonsin, widely known by his nickname “Mae Thap Kung” and currently referred to as “Phra Boonsin,” plans to end his Buddhist ordination in late November after spending time studying Buddhist teachings and practising meditation at Wat Pa Sri Khunaram in Udon Thani province.
During his time as a monk, Boonsin has participated in religious activities, shared Buddhist teachings with members of the public and contributed to the temple and surrounding community. He has also dedicated merit to soldiers who lost their lives while defending Thailand’s sovereignty during clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, according to the report.
Before leaving monkhood, he is also scheduled to undertake religious pilgrimage activities on November 8, 18 and 22. He reportedly intends to pay respects to senior Buddhist monks and continue religious activities with Luang Pu Sila Sirichantho.
Following his return to military duties, Boonsin plans to visit troops stationed along Thailand’s northeastern border, particularly in areas where he previously commanded military operations. The visits are intended to meet soldiers, offer encouragement and maintain his connection with personnel who served under his command.
Another part of his planned work will involve delivering talks to young people and members of the public across Thailand. Drawing on his military and border-security experience, he intends to discuss patriotism, sacrifice, unity, gratitude and personal responsibility, while encouraging young people to stay away from illegal drugs.
His return to the advisory position is scheduled for December 1, although the reports do not provide further details about the scope of his responsibilities.
