Prak Sokhonn Meets UN Secretary-General, Discusses Cambodia-Thailand Border Situation

NEW YORK, Sept. 26, 2026 — Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn held a bilateral meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the General Debate of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, Prak Sokhonn expressed Cambodia’s deep appreciation for the longstanding partnership between Cambodia and the United Nations, dating back to the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) mission in the 1990s and its contribution to the country’s national development.

The Cambodian foreign minister also expressed his appreciation for Guterres’ leadership of the United Nations and his efforts to strengthen the organisation’s role and relevance amid decades of profound global transformation, uncertainty and major challenges.

The two sides also exchanged views on the current situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, according to Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The meeting took place as Cambodia and Thailand continue to address outstanding border issues through diplomatic and international mechanisms. Earlier this month, the two countries held the first meeting of a Conciliation Commission established under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to address their maritime boundary dispute.

Thailand has separately said it remains committed to engaging in the UNCLOS process in good faith, while maintaining that the proceedings concern maritime boundary delimitation.

The UN Secretary-General’s office also published a readout confirming Guterres’ meeting with Prak Sokhonn in New York on Sept. 25.
