Sacred Vishnu-Garuda Statue Returned to Siem Reap After 15 Years
SIEM REAP, May 4, 2026 — Cambodian authorities held a ceremonial procession on Monday to return a sacred statue of Vishnu seated on Garuda to its original location in Siem Reap, following years of relocation and public calls for its reinstatement.
The statue, previously moved to Oddar Meanchey province between 2010 and 2011, was officially returned and reinstalled at a roundabout near Samdech Ov High School, a site linked to the former Siem Reap international airport.
Officials from Siem Reap and Oddar Meanchey provinces jointly organised the ceremony, which included traditional blessing rituals attended by local authorities and residents.
Authorities said the relocation back to its original site followed requests from the public, who view the statue as a symbol of prosperity, protection and harmony for the region.
In Khmer cultural and religious tradition, the depiction of Vishnu riding Garuda represents justice, strength and the safeguarding of peace, reflecting values deeply rooted in Cambodia’s historical and spiritual identity.
Local officials expressed hope that the return of the statue would bring auspiciousness and unity to the area, reinforcing cultural heritage and community spirit.
