Thai Citizen Faces Murder Investigation After Deadly Shooting in Cambodia

BANTEAY MEANCHEY, 31 July 2016 — Cambodian police have arrested a Thai national in connection with the fatal shooting of a fellow Thai citizen in the border city of Poipet following a joint investigation by national and provincial law enforcement authorities.

According to police, the shooting occurred at 3:17 a.m. on July 28 in Samakki Meanchey Village, Ou Chrov Commune, Poipet City, when two unidentified suspects riding a white Honda PCX motorcycle allegedly opened fire with handguns on JUSUWAN THONGCHAI, a 33-year-old Thai national.

The victim, who was riding a motorcycle at the time of the attack, died at the scene. The suspects fled immediately after the shooting.

Following the incident, the Criminal Police Department, acting under the direction of its leadership, launched a joint investigation with Banteay Meanchey Provincial Police and Poipet City Police.

Investigators later identified the suspects and tracked their whereabouts.

At 6:20 p.m. on July 29, police arrested one suspect, identified as Porawat Thong Hmon, a 26-year-old Thai national, in Samakki Meanchey Village, Ou Chrov Commune, Poipet City.

Authorities said they seized two handguns and two magazines during the arrest.

The suspect has been transferred to the Poipet City Police Inspectorate for questioning and further legal proceedings.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the killing or whether the second suspect remains at large. The investigation is ongoing.
