Thailand Releases Two Cambodian Fishermen Detained Since February

KOH KONG, Sept. 8, 2026 — Two Cambodian fishermen who were detained by Thai authorities in February have been released and returned home to reunite with their families, according to the Koh Kong Provincial Administration.

The two men were handed back to Cambodian authorities through the Cham Yeam International Border Checkpoint in Koh Kong province on the morning of September 7, following more than six months in detention.

The Koh Kong Provincial Administration said it coordinated with relevant Thai authorities to facilitate their release and return, under the attention of the Cambodian government and the direction of Koh Kong Governor Chey Vea.

The fishermen were among three Cambodian nationals arrested by the Thai navy on February 22, 2026, near Koh Yor in Koh Kong province. Cambodia had previously protested the arrests and called for the release of the fishermen.

The two fishermen have since been received by Cambodian authorities and sent back to their respective homes. The third fisherman involved in the February incident remains in Thai custody, according to Koh Kong provincial authorities.

The release comes amid continued efforts by Cambodian and Thai authorities to maintain communication and cooperation despite ongoing tensions along their shared border.
