Russian Ambassador Says Perekop Visit Highlights Cambodia-Russia Military Ties
SIHANOUKVILLE, Sept. 12, 2026 — Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik said the latest visit by the Russian Navy’s training ship Perekop to Sihanoukville demonstrates the strong friendship between Cambodia and Russia, particularly in the military sector.
Borovik made the remarks in Khmer on September 11 while welcoming the Perekop, a training vessel of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, during its port visit to Cambodia.
The ambassador said Russian naval visits to Sihanoukville are intended to strengthen friendship between the two countries and facilitate greater military exchanges.
“We have previously brought naval ships to Sihanoukville, with the aim of strengthening friendship between Russia and Cambodia,” Borovik said. He added that visits by Russian warships and training vessels demonstrate the countries’ friendly relations and help expand exchanges between their armed forces.
The Perekop is making its second visit to Cambodia, after previously calling at Sihanoukville in November 2019.
The latest visit is also the second Russian naval visit to Cambodia in 2026. On April 6, two Russian naval warships from the Pacific Fleet arrived in Sihanoukville for a three-day visit.
The recurring naval visits provide opportunities for military personnel from Cambodia and Russia to interact and exchange professional experience, while also reinforcing the longstanding defence relationship between the two countries.
The Perekop’s current visit includes engagement between Russian naval personnel and their Cambodian counterparts as part of the broader programme of bilateral military and people-to-people exchanges.
The visit comes as Cambodia and Russia continue to maintain defence cooperation alongside broader bilateral relations covering political, economic, educational and cultural areas.
