AI “Pilot” Romance Scam Leaves 66-Year-Old Thai Woman Waiting at Chiang Mai Airport
CHIANG MAI, Sept. 18, 2026 — A 66-year-old woman travelled alone from Lampang to Chiang Mai hoping to meet a man she had fallen for online, only to discover that the “pilot” she believed was real was actually an AI-generated character on Facebook.
Chiang Mai Tourist Police and airport security officers approached the woman at Chiang Mai International Airport at around 8 p.m. on September 16 after finding her waiting at the terminal for a man named “Chai” who had failed to appear.
The woman told officers that she had travelled from Lampang specifically to meet Chai, whom she believed was a real pilot and with whom she had developed a romantic relationship online.
After examining the situation, officers found that the images and online identity associated with Chai were linked to an AI-generated character appearing on Facebook. The realistic-looking images and content had led the woman to believe that she was communicating with a genuine person.
She had travelled from Lampang to Chiang Mai on her own and continued to the airport, expecting to meet the man in person.
Family Unaware She Had Left Home
The unusual situation prompted authorities to contact the woman’s family. Officers eventually reached her son, who said relatives had not known that she had travelled to Chiang Mai.
Tourist police, airport security personnel and other responders provided the woman with food and drinking water and arranged a safe place for her to stay while arrangements were made for her return home.
Officials subsequently coordinated with her family to ensure she could safely return to Lampang.
The incident has highlighted the growing difficulty of distinguishing genuine people from AI-generated identities on social media.
AI-generated images and characters can now appear highly realistic, potentially allowing users to develop emotional relationships with fictional identities without realising that the person they see online may not exist.
Authorities and online-safety advocates advise users to verify the identity of people they meet online through multiple independent sources, particularly before sharing personal information, sending money or travelling to meet someone in person.
The case also serves as a reminder that online relationships can have very real-world consequences — even when the person on the other side of the screen is not real.
