Hun Manet Urges Thailand to Help Restore Peace Along Cambodia-Thailand Border
PHNOM PENH, 20 September 2026 — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on Cambodians at home and abroad to strengthen national unity and work together to safeguard peace, as the country marks the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2026.
In a four-page message marking the occasion, Hun Manet said Cambodia’s painful experiences of war and what he described as recent Thai aggression against Cambodian territory had demonstrated the “immeasurable value” of peace.
The Prime Minister recalled the efforts of previous generations of Cambodian leaders to secure peace for the country, saying their achievements had created the conditions for Cambodia’s development and progress today.
He said the suffering and consequences of war, together with the impact of what the Cambodian government describes as Thailand’s recent aggression, had made Cambodians more deeply aware of the importance of preserving peace.
Hun Manet called on all Cambodians to join together to firmly protect and maintain peace.
“In this spirit, the Royal Government of Cambodia once again calls on Thailand to respect the agreements reached, participate in resolving border issues peacefully and in accordance with international law, in order to reduce tensions, build trust and work towards restoring peace along the Cambodia-Thailand border,” he said.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to the fundamental principles of peace, respect for sovereignty and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law and without the use of force.
He said these principles were essential to ensuring the security and well-being of the Cambodian people while supporting sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development.
Cambodia has repeatedly said it intends to address its border disputes with Thailand through existing bilateral mechanisms and international law. In recent months, Phnom Penh has also pursued compulsory conciliation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea over overlapping maritime claims with Thailand.
Thailand, meanwhile, has rejected Cambodian allegations concerning its conduct along the border and has said it remains committed to peaceful dispute resolution and implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21 to promote the ideals of peace and non-violence among nations and peoples.
