Cambodia to Present Regional, Global Positions at 81st UN General Assembly
PHNOM PENH, 22 September 2026 — Cambodia is preparing to present its perspectives on major regional and global issues at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn set to lead a high-level delegation to New York.
According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Prak Sokhonn will attend the General Debate from September 22 to 28, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
During the General Debate, Prak Sokhonn is expected to deliver Cambodia’s national statement, outlining Phnom Penh’s views on key regional and international developments.
He will also emphasize what Cambodia describes as the continuing importance of multilateralism and the need to further strengthen the role, effectiveness and relevance of the United Nations system in responding to increasingly complex and evolving global challenges.
Cambodia is also expected to highlight its development priorities and strategies, including its commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive development.
Beyond the General Debate, Prak Sokhonn is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA session. The meetings are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing Cambodia’s contributions to international peace and security and sustainable development.
The UNGA appearance comes shortly after Cambodia participated in the first meeting of the UNCLOS Conciliation Commission with Thailand in Singapore, where Prak Sokhonn served as Cambodia’s Agent. During that process, he reiterated Cambodia’s stated commitment to international law, peaceful dispute settlement and international institutions.
The maritime conciliation meeting concluded on September 16, with Cambodia and Thailand finalising the rules governing the proceedings and signing the Terms of Appointment for the Conciliation Commission.
Against this backdrop, Cambodia’s participation in the UN General Debate will provide another major international forum for Phnom Penh to articulate its positions on multilateral cooperation, international peace and security, development and the role of the UN in addressing global challenges.
The 81st General Assembly is being held under a theme centred on rebuilding trust and managing global transformation, reflecting the UN’s focus on strengthening multilateral cooperation amid evolving international challenges.
