No Slowdown in Anti-Scam Drive, Cambodia’s PM Says
PHNOM PENH, April 23, 2026 — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has ordered authorities to continue cracking down on online scam operations without pause, rejecting speculation that enforcement efforts would ease after the Khmer New Year holiday.
In a statement released after a full Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Hun Manet instructed law enforcement agencies and all relevant security forces to maintain pressure on cyber fraud networks and strictly enforce existing laws.
“The law already exists and must be implemented rigorously and effectively, without leniency or exception,” the statement quoted him as saying.
He also dismissed suggestions circulating publicly that the campaign would end or slow after the national New Year celebrations earlier this month.
Cambodia has stepped up operations against online scam compounds and cybercrime syndicates in recent months, amid growing international scrutiny over trafficking, fraud and organized crime networks operating in parts of Southeast Asia.
Authorities have reported a series of raids, arrests and investigations targeting illegal online fraud centers, including operations involving foreign nationals.
Hun Manet praised police, military and other agencies for what he described as significant recent successes in suppressing technology-based fraud.
The crackdown has become a key issue for Cambodia as the government seeks to improve law enforcement credibility, strengthen international cooperation and counter criticism over transnational cybercrime.
Analysts say continued enforcement could help Phnom Penh improve its international image, though sustained success will depend on prosecutions, cross-border coordination and tackling corruption linked to criminal networks.
Cambodia has repeatedly said it is committed to eliminating all forms of online fraud and related criminal activity.
