Khmer Sbai Carry Messages of Prosperity and Happiness for Francophonie Summit Guests
PHNOM PENH, October 26, 2026 — Dr Pich Chanmony, wife of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, has been learning about traditional Khmer sbai and their embroidery techniques as Cambodia prepares commemorative gifts for delegates attending the 20th Francophonie Summit in the Kingdom.
In a post, Dr Pich Chanmony highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the Khmer scarf, known as sbai, describing it as an elegant and treasured part of Cambodia’s cultural heritage.
She noted that Khmer ancestors had worn the traditional textile since ancient times, with its designs and craftsmanship continuing to evolve into the present day.
A Symbol of Cambodian Heritage and Blessings
According to Dr Pich Chanmony, Khmer sbai are intricately woven from fine silk or incorporate gold threads, featuring decorative motifs known as krom patterns, including the Phka Chan (moon flower) and Chak Chan designs.
She said these motifs bear similarities to Khmer carvings found on the towers of ancient temples, reflecting the depth and richness of Cambodia’s artistic traditions.
The patterns also carry symbolic meanings associated with prosperity, flourishing fortunes and happiness, she explained, adding to the cultural significance of the scarves.
The initiative to learn about the textile and its embroidery techniques is intended to help prepare commemorative gifts for delegates attending the 20th Francophonie Summit in Cambodia, showcasing the country’s traditional craftsmanship and cultural identity to international visitors.
